The 6 Different Kinds of Philanthropists You Hear About

December 19, 2007 by thefatpinkpig

Charity is widespread in our prosperous and benevolent society, but when it comes to philanthropy, giving comes in all shapes and sizes. In this article we examine the six different kinds of philanthropists and their best-known representatives.

1) The Celebrity Donor

Bono is the exemplar of a man using his celebrity as a force for philanthropic causes. According to Forbes’ article “Generous Celebs”, Bono has campaigned so effectively against the spread of AIDS that he was among the 191 nominees for this year’s Nobel Peace Prize. He has also participated in countless fundraising concerts like Live 8, and given his time and name to the fight against sexual abuse.

2) The Generous Businessman

Warren Buffet made headlines last year when he pledged to give 83% of his gigantic $52 billion net worth to charitable work through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. This unprecedented act of generosity shows that profit and benevolence can go hand-in-hand after all!

3) The Giving Athlete

Through the Curt’s Pitch program, Boston Red Sox star Curt Schilling (along with his wife Shonda) are staging one of the largest organized efforts to fund ALS research in existence. The entire Red Sox organization stands behind Curt’s efforts and actively promotes them as part of their baseball operations.

From the Curt’s Pitch website:

“As part of the program, donors receive incentive prizes from Curt and Shonda Schilling based on their level of giving. Those prizes include shirts, hats, autographed memorabilia and tickets to a reception hosted by Curt and Shonda. All proceeds benefit The ALS Association. “

4) The Kind Activist

George Soros (of MoveOn.org and Open Society fame) puts the bulk of his $8 billion net worth into philanthropy and left-wing political activism. Soros got his philanthropic start by funding political dissidents behind Stalin’s Iron Curtain during the Cold War, and currently pours tens of millions of dollars into ending African poverty. Other charitable projects include $100 million for Internet infrastructure development in Russia. In total, it is said that Soros has donated over $6 billion to philanthropy in his lifetime.

5) The Provisional Politician

Bill Clinton’s post-Presidential career has largely been a foray into philanthropy and charitable causes. Through the William J. Clinton foundation, Clinton promotes AIDS research, global public health, and the elimination of poverty. Clinton was also an active and ambitious fundraiser for Hurricane Katrina victims.

6) The Charitable Church Leader

Rick Warren is a true apostle of altruism, donating 90% of his yearly salary to charity as a matter of course. The best-selling author of “A Purpose Driven Life” has done more to advance the cause of giving than arguably any religious leader in the modern era. From his website:

“As philanthropists, Rick and Kay Warren give away 90% of their income through three charities: Acts of Mercy, which serves people with AIDS, Equipping Leaders, which trains leaders in developing countries, and The Global PEACE Fund, which fights poverty, disease, corruption, and illiteracy using local congregations.”

10 Celebrities And Their Insured Body Parts

December 19, 2007 by thefatpinkpig

Everybody has a part of their body that they use more frequently than the rest. If you’re a runner, you might think of your legs. If you play a musical instrument, you might think of your hands. If you like to marry wealthy people in hopes of one day gaining a large inheritance, you might think of your face. Have you ever considered what might happen to your favorite activities or even your job if these parts were to become horribly disfigured?
Many Hollywood celebrities have thought about this, and the solution they found might surprise you! It’s called body part insurance, and it’s not as uncommon as you might expect. As time has passed, stranger and stranger insurance stories have come forward. Below is a list of ten celebrities who have decided to insure their body parts.

1) Betty GrableThis 1940’s superstar had her legs insured for $1 million each! It seems the only partner worthy of having her would be the million dollar man!

2) Merv HughesThis Cricket champion had his trademark mustache insured for $317,000 dollars. He must have felt he simply couldn’t perform should anything happen to that small animal living on his face!

3) Dolly Parton Sixty-one year old country singer Dolly Parton had her world famous breasts insured for $300,000 each! It makes sense, seeing as they are just as responsible for her fame as her voice!

4) Hedi KlumSupermodel Hedi Klum, star of the new hit show “Project Runway,” has her legs insured for $2 million!

5) Ken DoddKen Dodd, who holds the world record for the most jokes told in a three and half hour time span, insured his teeth for $7.4 million! He claims his teeth were instrumental to his act, but wouldn’t the jokes be even funnier if he had no teeth at all?

6) Egon RonayRonay is a world famous food critic who obviously makes his living from his tongue (a career trait he shares with the next person on the list.) Not surprisingly, drinking a coffee too hot or a milkshake too cold could spell disaster for the man’s ability to root out the gourmet from the Burger King! That’s why he decided to take out a $400,000 dollar policy on his taste buds!

7) Carol DodaFamed striptease dancer of the California scene Carol Doda had her breasts insured for an undisclosed amount. Would it violate the terms of the policy if she got implants?

8) Jaime Lee CurtisJamie Lee Curtis has an insurance policy on both of her legs for an undisclosed amount. She was probably nervous that one of these days, Mike Meyers would get just a bit too rough!

9) Bruce SpringsteenWorld famous rock singer Bruce Springsteen had his voice insured for $6 million in the 1980’s. Apparently he simply refused to end up canceling tour dates over a bad cold. He is “The Boss” after all!

10) Keith RichardsAs the world famous guitarist for the Rolling Stones, Richards had his hands insured for an undisclosed amount. He must not have had too much Sympathy for the Devil, as he couldn’t imagine what would happen to his career if he suddenly shattered his fingers!
